Consortia’s Mafia Dons

In 2017, I penned a post titled 'Fake authorship...and consortia’s Mafia Dons,' which now resonates even more profoundly in light of the prevalence of what I term 'Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent, and Immortal' scientists—individuals whose names persist on papers long after their passing. I urge you to review the email attached at the conclusion of this post for further context.

In an era rife with fraudulent data, dubious authorship, and an alarming trend toward papers boasting hundreds or even thousands of co-authors, it becomes increasingly untenable to discern the genuine contributions of each individual. Consequently, the traditional practice of relying on the assessment of just 2-3 reviewers for paper validation seems inadequate.  I argue that papers warranting the highest esteem are those where the contribution of each co-author is transparent, those that have undergone rigorous scrutiny by a multitude of academics, or those that have garnered significant citations. These, and only these, merit the designation of the 'holy grail' of scientific literature.

Lex Bouter (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), Tony Mayer (Nanyang Technological University) and Nick Steneck (University of Michigan, USA), Co-Chairs of Fifth World Conference on Research Integrity provided written evidence to the Science and Technology Committee of UK Parliament that addresses Research Integrity issues where one can read the following: "the whole system of academic research is currently permeated by perverse incentives (from governments through funding agencies, to institutions and thence to individuals) through the academic reward system that need to be removed or at least diminished

Assunto: The immortal scientists that keep on publishing even after they´ve died

Why is that science watchdogs are not very much concerned over fake authorship? Do they really believe its normal that someone can produce a paper every 5 days has been mentioned by Stanford Full Professor John Ioannidis in the email below?

Let´s look for instance to Arnold L. Rheingold who according to Scopus has 2055 publications and that in 2018 at the age of 78 years old has manage to publish 37 journal papers. Or Howard Maibach that has 1734 Scopus publications and at the age of 89 years old publishes around 25 Scopus publications per year. Or to Harold A.Scheraga that has 1239 Scopus publications and keeps on publishing at the age of 97 ! What do they drink ? Science viagra ?

Or even better to Alan Roy Katritzky who according to Scopus has/had 1658 publications. Its truth that he died at the age of 86 years the same year that he published 27 publications referenced on Scopus being that even one year after his death almost a dozen with his name were published referenced on Scopus. Of course, we can imagine a scientist that left his "team" so many excellent ideas that for the next years after his death they keep on adding his name to the publications ! But how many years after one´s death is it possible to keep publishing? 1, 5, 50 years ?

Academia, vanitas and organized crime

Concerning the recent case of the unfortunate 39 victims in an icebox cemetery truck in Essex and the 58 in Dover suffocated to death in the year 2000, that is just a sign of the multibillion human trafficking "business" it makes some sense to see how academia worries on the issue of organized crime.

A search on Web of Science shows that the first publications on "organized crime" appeared 63 years ago, but it took 13 years for those to exceed more than 10 per year and only in the new millennium were those publications able to cross the barrier of 100 per year. Also Scopus search shows that there are around 5.000 Scopus indexed publications with the term “organized crime” in the title, abstract or key-words while if we search for the term “fashion and design” the Scopus algorithm returns around 24.000 publications. It almost seems that in academia vanitas rule over gravitas !

Be there as it may check some recent papers below and also the link for the European project Takedown that was finished two months ago:

Analysis of Organized Crime in England using Intelligence Records
“We present aggregated intelligence data on all known organized crime groups (ocgs) and ocgs members...encompassing records on 2,726 highly-prolific offenders and 280 groups, collated based on over a million records from multiple law enforcement agencies.”

Constructing the mafia concept on the bench.

Government Complicity in Organized Crime
“Government complicity in organized crime is more likely where the rule of law is weak, criminal activities are large and complex, and illicit money is concentrated in fewer hands and represents a greater share of national income.”https://pdf.usaid.gov/pdf_docs/PA00TSH2.pdf

The Evolution of the Most Lethal Criminal Organization in Brazil
“Having demonstrated its capacity for mobilization and upon realizing the impact caused by what would be considered the biggest riot in Brazil’s history, PCC leaders were convinced of their ability to confront, embarrass, and blackmail the state. The organization’s debut proved so successful that the PCC began to call itself the “Party of Crime.” Soon after this first collective action, and less than a decade after its establishment, the PCC adopted an action plan that would define it as a “third-generation gang” with a political agenda and transnational connections.” https://www.jstor.org/stable/26597310?seq=2#metadata_info_tab_contents

The creativity of Asian employees and the quest for immortality through "creative achievements in art or science"

"Some Asian countries have recently announced new national slogans advocating creativity and innovation. Paradoxically, these slogans support Asians’ self-deprecating belief that they are not as creative as Westerners. To investigate whether this belief is true, especially in the management field, we review 29 articles across various levels of analysis of cultural differences in creativity and innovation. Our review demonstrates that collectivism, power distance, and uncertainty avoidance have had mixed results in influencing creativity and innovation" https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13602381.2018.1535380

The text above was taken from a paper titled "Cultural differences in creativity and innovation: are Asian employees truly less creative than western employees?"Also interesting in this context is the paper published in the journal of Creative bheavior titled "Can Creativity Beat Death?"

“One theory for studying the relationship between creativity and symbolic immortality is Terror Management Theory (TMT)....Human beings, like other organisms, are driven by a selfpreservation instinct, yet they are unique in their cognitive capacity to understand their finitude. The conflict between one's mortality awareness and survival goals creates an existential paradox, which may lead to experiencing severe anxiety, or terror. The theory maintains that in order to defend oneself from this potential terror, people invest in two interrelated psychological structures. The first is a cultural worldview: a set of socially constructed and validated beliefs that provide meaning, order, a set of principles to live by, and the promise of either literal (i.e., promise of an afterlife) or symbolic immortality to socially valued individuals. The second deathanxiety buffering structure is selfesteem…According to TMT, symbolic immortality may be achieved via longlasting creative achievements in art or science…” https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/jocb.171

PS - Regarding immortality within the realm of science, please check the email (below) I dispatched to several thousand colleagues on October 27, 2016:

Assunto: Honor in the Academic Profession: How Professors Want to be Remembered by Colleagues

https://muse.jhu.edu/article/612675/summary

60 physicists of all ages working at a range of U.S. universities were interviewed in person by the author about multiple aspects of their careers, including the scientists’ aspirations, assessments of their achievements and failures, and conceptions of future and “immortalized” selves. Interviews from which the present work was drawn averaged 90 minutes in length...For the present work, attention is focused on a specific question asked of the respondents: “How would you like to be remembered by your colleagues?

desires to be remembered by colleagues on principally professional terms increase as institutional prestige increases. By contrast, desires to be remembered on principally personal terms increase as institutional prestige declines...As age increases, desire to be remembered on principally professional terms declines; and the desire to be remembered on principally personal terms intensifies. What is more, as age increases, the percentage of scientists “not caring” about how colleagues remember them increases. The percentage of scientists not caring about how their colleagues remember them, combined with the percentage of those desiring remembrance in personal ways, is particularly striking in the eldest cohort, where the attenuation of professional emphases is most pronounced. Great scientific achievement—even in an era of modern science—has been connoted with “unlocking the mind of God”(Paul, 1980).    In an absence of great achievement, morality preserves a route to salvation, identifying

how people can orient themselves to the “good” (Stets, 2010). In addition, it always marks sacrifice, as though to say: “Look at what I gave up, so that others could prosper.” By invoking claims to a moral status, a scientist—relegated to a location peripheral to the major activity at the center of science—provides an excuse as well as an explanation for not having fully realized one’s own ego. Remembered as “being good” by others in the profession thus becomes compensation for comparative failure...Morality, because it is the embodiment of virtue, is a protected status.

French early career researchers are the biggest users of the pirated science Sci-Hub

“Sci‐Hub, which now contains 85% of all paywalled journals, is undoubtedly popular...receiving as it does 200,000 requests a day...with French ECRs being the biggest users. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/leap.1206

Apart from the discussion morality/legality also mentioned in the paper above:
“digital piracy, of which Sci‐Hub is a prime example, is arguably mala prohibita, that is, an act that is technically illegal but not morally wrong, rather than mala in se, an act that is ‘bad in itself’. Thus, the argument may be, as he puts it…what's genuinely wrong is restricting access to knowledge; copyright piracy as a method of opening up access to knowledge is not ‘wrong’ – it's merely illegal’.

Juízes maçons no Governo

https://www.publico.pt/2019/10/24/politica/opiniao/sera-juiz-secretario-estado-1891052
