"96.9% of total healthcare grants were assigned to EU-15 countries...EU grant allocation for healthcare research also seemed to be dependent on the economic status and the size of the countries, while higher disease burden per 100,000 inhabitants apparently did not attract more EU research funding. As economic status is strongly correlated with the health status of the population, the current funding mechanism further increases the gap in terms of health status between more and less developed countries"
