The aforementioned PhD Thesis that was defended at the University of London also
cites an interesting publication that goes by the title "On
the Take: Criminalizing Illicit Enrichment to Fight Corruption"
Maybe the economic recovery of Europe should start
with an increased effort to fight corruption. Let´s not forget that a few
years ago EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem mentioned that corruption
costs the European economy more
than 100 billion euros every year. And there are those with even much
higher numbers like the Green group in the European Parliament.
So
why not start by imposing sanctions on the European countries that appear in
the Top 10 positions in the Financial
Secrecy Index ? Or better yet let´s make a blacklist with the name of those European citizens
who have the most money in offshore accounts (Top 1%) and let´s pass a law that prevents
them from leaving their home country on the ground of health reasons because, as they are very toxic people, they can contaminate other people!
